Betaflight VS Raceflight
#1
so I heard Betaflight might support F4 FC in future, so what would be the difference between them as for now, and in the future in your opinion?

Has Raceflight got any advantage over BF?

One of the big advantages was that Raceflight had multishot support and Betaflight didn't, but that is no longer a problem as support was added to Betaflight.

This is a nice video which shows off Raceflight.

Current quad: ZMR 250 / DYS SE2205 / Littlebee 20A ESCs / Drone Lab 1500 4S / Naze32 Rev5 / BF 2.7.1
FPV: Runcam Skyplus / Aomway 200mw VTX / Fatshark DomV1

Maybe old topic but I recently learning/tuning/having fun with raceflight and found some advantages on their BB2XX versions (Beta):

ProSmooth mode smooth out your stick feels good for people with shaky hands.

Even more fly time than betaflight maybe the filters they created have something to do with it, but sure a better tune betaflight can do the same.

The off throttle air time is more and precise when doing tricks.

Response I still find about the same.

Raceflight configurator also allow to change esc settings and flash firmware, but not all esc support yet.

However, their BB version still buggy I found, I term grow after arm and motor rev up on the ground (it's OK found if leave for too long will reset itself). Blackbox might having problem to record for such a low looptime and not even support sd card. No level mode I believe or never work.

I donno still learning it but the feels is great.

Another important aspect to me is the source code availability.
Betaflight is still GPL v3 on Github.
Raceflight abandonned Github and public source codes months ago, rewriting from scratch for a new release, with a new license.
It is likely that they move from GPL to BSD for iOS support.
It is just me, but I fear they get the firmware core closed-source, time will tell.

The first two release candidates of Betaflight 3.0 are out with F4 support. I'm running the same version of Betaflight on both my F3 and F4 boards. https://github.com/betaflight/betaflight/releases

I totally agree with Maxor. I dislike the closed development of the new Raceflight.

Boris and all of the other contributors of Betaflight are great though. I can't wait to see what they do with their PID controller for F3 and F4 boards.

It's like hugging a cloud while riding a unicorn LOL

But seriously, feels super locked in even if you see that the quad is untuned, but I must say I was pretty impressed with latest betaflight on a soft mounted board. But it was hard to compare - my bf quad made a death roll 15 seconds after launching, had no more opportunities to test Wink

What fc are you running raceflight on? I'm thinking about getting a fc to try it out, but not sure which board I should get.

My fc is Demonrc Soul F4 (demonrc.eu), one of the boards approved by raceflight team. You can also try the Revolt, but from what I see it has some gyro noise issues - thats not my opinion, I don't own one.

this is just my experience with RaceFlight. after having built 2 quads with the raceflight revolt flight controller, i've found that the raceflight firmware has many bugs in it. flight characteristics are great if you're able to get your quad in the air. tuning is a little difficult due to a really sensitive gyro. your set up needs to be on point, soft mounted flight controller, low esr capicitor, will really help you avoid issues. good motors that don't produce a lot of noise and vibration helps also. so "my opinion" is, at this point of raceflight (still in beta), it is good. has a lot of potential of being great. harder to set up and get in the air than betaflight. once in the air it's going to take a little bit of time to dial in your quad. but is worth the effort. just like every new product there's going to be a few wrinkles that has be iorned out.

edit: please keep in mind that this is just my opinion. i'm not an expert, my knowledge is limited, and i'm just an average pilot at best.

im also running the soul as konrad, currently on BB400 (finally having the buzzer working, still without osd which should come in RF1)

i've managed to get up in the air as Jimmy is pointing ( i think we just got lazy with CF/BF and now something new required a bit of adaptation... a lot)... but once you get into the air... for me it is a dream... i've never seen my quad so locked in (on stock pids), and due to the stock pids i hate my current expo as it is different to what im used to (i tend to have more flips a second than default).

funny stuff i've seen so far... when i set it on specific height... it is moving like on the rail...
what i "dislike" overextending beta and a lot of bugs in the configurator for which i;ve smashed few times... the biggest one was chagning the default quad from XL to 1234 which resulted in my quad turning into "crazy blender of death" - as it was on 5051 props - i don;t need to add that my kitchen wasn't too happy to host this test flight.

what i really like is the noise separation, i've been flying on 4 props of 5051 which normally on cf/bf i would already thrown out... here it resulted in "slight" oscilations Smile
but still flyable and having fun... lots of it.
All the best

Do you have issues with the Soul not appearing in the device list sometimes? Stefan had some Soul FCs but his MacBook wasn't showing them in the /dev directory every once in a while.

I had this issue in the beginning on windows, but only before first flash. Grisha will be able to tell more about how it behaves on macs.

on my mac(im a noob user) it worked correctly, also later on i've tested it on windows also found no issues (but windows computers are affraid of me so they behave nicley)..
now i only connect it to mac as i use it more often.

initially i've had some problems into getting into the bootloader and to flash the damn thing... but eventually after a gaziliion tries it kicked in... and from that moment it was "the adaptation time - fighting with configurator"

I'm trying to flash a SPRacing F3 Banggood clone with RF, but I always get the error "No response from the bootloader, programming: FAILED". Is there something I need to do except short the boot pins? Flashing betaflight is no problem
