Betaflight, Cleanflight, and Raceflight
#1
I am ina  quandary over whether to use Betaflight, Cleanflight, or Raceflight. I use Betaflight becuase it is simple, but I hear that Cleanflight is "better". What about this Raceflight thing? Is it better or not as good? I just want some opinions on each becuase they all seem like great softwares.

Cleanflight is less bleeding edge than Betaflight. They are both based on the same code base but Betaflight has more experimental features and Cleanflight is meant to be the more stable version.

Raceflight is closed source and built on theft. I'm not interested in it and I won't buy their hardware either.

So is Cleanflight better or Betaflight better? Is there any difference in performance? I heard that UAVfutures said that Betaflight was more stable.

Most of your questions are situational. There is no generic answer. That said I can tell you for me, my quadcopters are all on betaflight and I'm very pleased with its performance. Betaflight is very common and easy to search google for a question or problem. Someone has already answered every possible question and fixed every possible problem with Betaflight.
Flying: Talon 6S 6" 2407s 381g no bat, Martian 3, 5" 2205s sooo heavy + gopro session 5 573g AUW, Aurora 5" 2205s 280g no bat, Druckbaer 3" 1404s 172g AUW 3S 550, BQE Megapixel 2.5" 1107s 139g AUW 3S 550, BabyHawk R 2.5" 164g AUW 3S 550 (stock except microeagle, CRSF, 2.5" arms) and maybe 3 more, for now...

I agree completely with McDee.

There is no "better". The answer is "it depends".

All my quads that I have built in the last year are running Betaflight. The ones built before then are running whatever they got flashed with at the time. I won't update them just for the sake of it either.

This is a complex hobby and the barrage of questions you've asked tell me that you need to spend a lot more time reading and learning. One of the best sites out there is Oscar's (https://oscarliang.com/) and it has lots of well structured information for the beginner. Spend as much time as you can reading the information there. The site has a perfect starting point just here: https://oscarliang.com/mini-quad-racing-guide/

If you read that page and the various other articles that are linked to from it, you'll have answers to all the questions you have asked so far.

First off, I love your questions Raspberrypi. It's great to see someone jumping into the hobby asking the questions that a lot of newcomers have but probably don't ask as much as they should. As these threads are answered with different perspectives that stuff sticks around and future new pilots will get the chance to learn from the discussions as well.

So as a pilot who is now experienced but is probably a little newer than the rest of these guys I can tell you that flying betaflight is to someone who has started the hobby from 2017 on is much like owning a cell phone is to someone who was born in the 90s on. While the folks who were around before still think that there is a such thing as a world where you might have a land line the truth is everyone has a cell phone now.

Cleanflight is still around but it's not really even a matter of stability any more. All of the good stuff goes into betaflight now and as a result your quad will actually be more reliable by using betaflight. This is because right now the latest stuff coming out in betaflight (like dynamic filtering mentioned in your other thread) actually makes a quad more flyable. While it might not seem like a long time ago, back in the dark ages of 2016 and before people used cleanflight because it was supposed to be more stable.

Now for Raceflight... I have no experience... same with KISS... However I think some folks do have a preference for them as specialized products. Based on some of unseen's feedback over the months about how they are not open source and everything I've pretty much just stayed away from them. Plus from what I understand the latest version of betaflight is so good that it actually makes the so-called benefits of KISS moot.

Start with betaflight and stick with it until you want to experiment. Then if you want to experiment with other flight controller firmware that's the point to start venturing into others if you like.

Thanks so much! That really cleared up a lot for me.
