Bent motor shafts

I guess the factory will sell you shafts but they don’t like dealing with small orders. And then there is a MOQ that will get them interested but its has to be like 10000 shafts assuming they are a couple of cents each.

I hate what economics and safety has done to various industries. I used go be able to walk into machine shops and dig through their scrap for aluminum or steel I required for projects at scrap prices. Today I can’t even get into the main shop area due to safety reasons. If I call up suppliers, they want a business account and want to sell me 6m lengths. Online metal merchants literally sell offcuts at 5 times the price per kg.

Just how it is today, they do not want repairable/serviceable products and want you to throw away old stuff and buy new.

One work around will be to post an add out in your local FPV groups for wanting to buy old damaged motors preferably with burned windings and salvage the shafts.

Here is an example: It may sound stupid and I regret it but I have bought a old used drill press only to salvaged a motor and pulley and sold the rest to scrap dealers. I needed it to repair my drill press (thats older than me). A new motor and pulley was costing me 5 times the market price of the drill press itself.

Economics and safety is the biggest cause of pollution today Smile

This is the same in Europe, I used to acquire different types of material more easily. Currently, only consumer goods are available, the end customer is considered an absolute idiot. Anything "special" cannot normally be purchased, so that the customer does not "hurt himself". It bothers me a lot, unfortunately, the new generation is completely different, they are totally out. So if I want something, it's only in a specialized warehouse, where the regular end customer can't shop. So I have to buy everything as a business entity.

Hmm, reporting success!

I was already completely desperate, but I usually don't give up that easily. Forget the lathe.

So I pulled my good old Proxxon Micromot micromill out of the drawer and put the motor bell in the tiny precision collet. And what didn't happen, every attachment of the new motor bell with straight shaft was absolutely precise and completely centered.

In 15 minutes I straightened the first bent shaft in older motor bell, absolutely no vibrations, the shaft does not move from the center of rotation. I don't have more time today, but it looks like it will be possible to straighten all the shafts. Leaning back is very easy, I did it gradually in about seven smaller steps.

Good to hear you managed to find a workaround.

Those Proxxon collets are fairly precise and light years ahead of Dremel type rotary tools on the market.

In the end it's not that simple, I was lucky with the first piece. It is simply a hit or miss event. Getting close to the center is relatively easy, getting to the pure center is difficult and tedious. I've now straightened another shaft for about 40 minutes and I'm still not in the center.

When you crash you can bend two shafts at the same time in a split of a second. It can take more than an hour or even more to straighten a couple of shafts. And again, replacing the shaft, if it could be bought, is for a few minutes ...

I finished the work today. In total, I straightened 6 shafts and changed all the bearings (12 pieces 5x2x2.5). I made a tool for easy removal and installation of bearings. The absolutely key thing when pressing in the bearings is to push only on the outer circumference of the bearing, otherwise the bearing, this small bearing, will be destroyed immediately.

In the end, I did the straightening of the shafts differently, the final check must be done on the stator with the original bearings, nothing else has a comparably accurate and centered fit. On the quad, I unsoldered the DJI Vista power supply, connected the FC to the BF and with connected battery rotated the bell motor through the Motor menu. With arrow keys is possible to slowly change rpm. The motor bell is always only inserted and not secured. In this way, the motor bell can be very easily checked for its straight shaft, pulled out immediately and attached to the collet for further possible correction. The production of fixtures took 2 hours, and straightening the shafts with replacement of all bearings took a total of 4 hours. That's not bad, I can solve it myself at any time now, I have the tools and I know how to solve it quite effectively.

its about the use we does, there was such sort of motors in the past by zmx (today called brotherhobby if i am right). i have some replacement shafts and bells for my old zmx 2205 engines.

todays requirements are fast improvements in a few gramasmore trust, general good durability but no repairability... replacement culture... low in price. 10-30bucks for such motors is awesome, therefor we cant expect everything Undecided

its like fast food with motors in fpv, fast pleasure... sometimes a full meal would have benefits, it could holdup for longer...
