Battery choice for 5 inch quads
#1
Hi guys,

Usually I fly my 5 inch quads (the Nazgul5 for example) with 6S 1300mah batteries, let's consider a weight of the quad of 470g and a weight of the battery of 225g. Total weight will be about 700g. No action cam for now.

With this setup, flight time is about 5 to 8 minutes depending on how much I push the throttle.

I bought also some 6S 1550mah in the past but I "feel better" with 1300mah...

Do you think I may get a better performance using a smaller battery like a 1050mah or 1100mah (weight would be about 180g) ?  I would like to get a suggestion from you before buying new batteries.

In the near future I would like to use a Gopro9 without battery (~118g). With a total weight of about 820g the situation changes ?

Thanks

Assuming you're not doing anything wacky (lightweight, big flight times, long range) most 5-inch people go for the 1000-1100 mAh range for 6S. That's roughly equivalent to 1500 mAh on 4S. It's sounds like you're getting pretty long flight times, so I would absolutely sacrifice some of that for a better handling quad.

I run my quads pretty light (640g AUW with a Runcam 5) but some people prefer to fly with a bit more mass. That said, 820g is really chonky ...

The ground is for dead people.

I checked better the weight of my quads:

The one with SL5 V2.1 frame, which is the heaviest, weighs about 420g with props but without battery and without cam.

GoPro9 without battery and side door weighs about 118g, let's say 140g with TPU support and cable.

Choosing carefully a light 6S 1000/1050mah battery, it will add about 180g.

Final weight will be 740g, probably a bit less.

Oh, that's totally reasonable.

If I had to guess I'd say most freestyle quads are in the 680-740 range these days.

Good to know!

And, considering this range of weight, do you think 1050mah 6S are ok ?

I was considering Tattu R-Line V1.0 1050mah 95C (only 170g) but I have a terrible doubt.... since now R-Line V4 are available, shall the previous versions be considered as old unsold batteries deposited for years in a stock ? Or did they continue to produce also previous versions ?

+1 1050mah
its still a lot battery/wh, you could even give a 850mah 6s a try :-)
