Balancing Motors
#1
Hello,

A couple of my brushless MT2204-2300KV motors are out of balance and I've found multiple tutorials online which say to use a piece of vinyl tape to balance out the heavy side of the motor.

My issue is that once the motors spin up to a high speed the tape flies off the side of the motor.

Do you guys have any other recommended ways to balance motors?

Thanks!

You could try with a file and remove some of the metal, but I would first try to balance them with tape just to make sure which side to remove the metal. I have not tried this method myself so if I was to do it, I would be very careful not to remove too much

Do they actually need balancing? are they affecting your flying in anyway?

Could always use a cable tie around the motor.

Aluminum tape holds well.

It's not affecting my flying, but one of my motors is badly out of balance and it makes me cringe every time it spins up.

I balance my motors, I have motor vibration OCD, for sure use aluminium tape as someone else here mentioned, it works really well. It takes a little practice to get it right but it can significantly quieten down some motors.. Unless of course the bearings are shot then that's a whole different story.

Back in the days when I was running 9/10 inch propellers, on these big 2212 motors, I always balanced them. This is how i used to do it...

I have never done it on mini quad motors though because I don't think there is need for that, I haven't seen one unbalanced mini quad motors I have used (2204/2206/1806/1306 etc)... If your motors really came unbalanced then it's really got crap quality and you should ask for a refund LOL...

You can use clean/betaflight motor tab (graphs) now, no need for external device Smile

Good idea!  Never occurred to me that that graph showed vibrations.  (Setting scale to 0.05 might actually make that usable for balancing.)
