Bad motor, RaceStar BR2205, 2300kv
#1
So one of KT-Mini's motors failed while in flight.  About 15 packs on them.  The flight before the failure, something sounded a little off.  Sent it aloft after looking at everything and feeling like I was hearing things.

The port rear motor stopped spinning after about a minute of light flight.  It was about 25' up and landed in the tall grass of our lower yard.  Retrieved, inspected it again and found the motor not turning unless I wiggled the wiring.  Then noted that the core was loose.  I think the motor can be repaired, though confidence in them is shaken a little.

These motors have never gotten even warm to the touch, no matter how hard the craft has been pushed.  They are replaced now with a set of HobbyMate 2204, 2300kv motors that were in the spare parts drawer.  I have a test flight on them and they will do for now, but not enough time with them to see if they will remain.  They allow for the craft to fly for now.

I have been looking at the Lumenier MB2206-9 2450KV Freybott SE motors as an option at some point.

Back in the present, I will be attempting to repair the RaceStar motor...more soon!

The core was loose? you mean the winding inside the motor is not making a solid contact or possibly disconnected?

Yes and no.  With the motor off, if I move the wires that go to the ESC, the whole winding moves back and forth.  It is only about a millimeter in ether direction, but the core is not longer attached to the base inside the motor.  Not sure if I am explaining this clearly...the other three do not exhibit this "looseness".

Ok, motor is apart and I found the core loose...none of the other three have loose cores. I also found a winding half separated from its lead...the cause fo the failure. It would appear that the core was moving enough to break the winding as the wires "work hardened" from continuous flexing.

Those Lumenier Freybott motors are very sexy, glad that you have the hobbymate back ups, and god luck repairing the racerstar's...

OMG, right?  I love the colors...yes, I am that guided by silly things like colors Smile

For now, I have a replacement RacerStar coming so there is no rush to repair, but I feel like I want to try to rebuild the broken one.  Thanks for the luck wishing!  What is the worst that can happen?

The difficult part (to me at least) would be to solder these coated winding wires back together... Sad

What's the best solution / way to do this?

Really starting to look like re-winding the motor will be the only way to make it happen. Pics to follow in a few as to what I found...

So the winding that broke and caused the failure is the center wire.

The winding are all intertwined, so reworking one is not really an option.  It will have to be all 3 that get redone.  I sometimes feel like I am getting in deeper than I can actually handle, but it has been so worth it so far!!!  Off to YouTube to see if I can find a good video on winding motors anew  Big Grin

Just lost a second one to the same issue.  Same brand and type, same failure...lost a winding connection.  I think I am safe in saying that these motors, while pretty, are not for me.  Not sure what I am doing that is causing the failures.

Neither of the two RacerStar BR2205 motors had been involved in a crash.  They are mounted solidly on the arm and the motors were not moving around on their bases.  I am now shifting my "cheap" motor selection to RCX RS2206 motors to see if I have better luck with them.  Just wish they were pink  Dodgy

Agreed, you should just switch brands. Tiger Motor makes some nice pink ones! Also, the DYS Fire motors aren't pink, but they're a really cool shade of purple. Oh, and both are well-rated motors as well

OMG, the Tiger motors are sweet!!! I think there is a set of those in my future. I have two of the Freybott motors and am ordering two more for my high end build. Mostly looking for motors for flying around the yard and the Tigers are a prefect fit.

I look forward to your sharing your experience with the "S" versions.  After receiving the RCX RS2206 motors, I feel I am pretty much through with RacerStar motors.  For the extra couple of dollars, the quality difference is night and day.  Hopefully you have better luck with RacerStar! Smile

This shows the winding on all 4 of the RCX I bought for $11 per motor from MyRCMart.

Either they used a REALLY top end winding machine, or they are hand wound.  They are just not as pretty as my BR2205's Dodgy
