Average life of 1104 motors?
#1
The Lizard motors get hot, but keep spinning regardless. Curious really, what length of service would be a guess?

As always, "It depends". Smile

If you get them too hot (as in too hot to hold your finger on the motor for five seconds), the magnets in the motor will start to lose their magnetism. When this happens, the motor's kv value will start to increase and power output will decrease.

Otherwise, the only thing that will wear out eventually is the bearings. Hard crashes and excess heat will shorten the life of the bearings, as will getting them wet or getting sand or other contaminants in them. A really nasty crash may even bend the motor shaft.

If you can avoid these things, the motors will last for many years.

Sweet, thanx for the reply! I am pretty careful to keep the motors clean and dry whenever I can. Just thought about buying a spare set...used to finite life of brushed motors.

When I'm doing a build I'll buy an extra one (5 instead of 4) to use as a spare.  Although possible, it is more likely you wont need to replace more then one at a time.....so if you use your spare you should have time to get another one on hand before you need it. Big Grin

sirdude makes a good point. It's always a good idea to buy one more motor and one more ESC than you need. Even with the best of care, an unlucky crash can always take out a motor and/or an ESC, so having spares ensures that you'll be back in the air in a matter of hours instead of weeks.

I learned this the hard way when I crashed my Atom 122 not long after I had built it. The crash involved a sturdy wooden picnic table which I clipped at high speed right on one of the motors. The crash ripped the motor clean off the mounting screws, completely destroying the threads and bending the motor shaft. By the time my replacement motor had arrived from China, the flying season was over.

I bought a few replacement parts for the Lizard when I first started flying it. I based the need on my experience with brushed motor builds where it feels like things wear out so quickly. I have been flying the brushless motors for a long while and thy just keep going. Guess just looking for reassurance Smile

It sounds like you're all ready to get a few more spares and build your next craft! Big Grin
