Asking for FC and gyro chip recomendation
#1
I have an old MAMBA F405 DJI MINI and the ESC is an equally old MAMBA F35 (4in1). I want to replace the FC with one that has onboard black box recording, and keep the ESC. I've been reading a little about the gyros and some questions. I can locally choose between a few different options and would like to know if there is any one preferred over the other, or any one I should avoid at all costs.

The contenders:
MAMBA MK4 F405 Mini
MAMBA Basic MK3 F722 Mini
MAMBA MK4 F722 Mini

From what I understand there are two versions of the MK4 F722, one with BMI270 gyro, the other with ICM42688P gyro. I have read that the ICM42688P gyro has made a lot of people unhappy. I don't yet know which of them is the one I would receive (will ask before purchase). Then there is the F405 MINI with yet another gyro, the MPU6500 (which appears to be noisier than the MPU6000). And what about the F722 MK3 with the MPU6000 giro while they still are available? Do I loose anything by choosing MK3 over MK4 apart from it not having DJI Air Unit connector?

I'll be using crossfire nano as RX and a DJI Air Unit as VTX. Of the above options, is one of them much preferred over the other? Is there one that I should avoid at all costs? If I was to guess it would be the MK4 F722 with BMI270 gyro that is the preferable option for my application. Would that be correct?

For those that noticed, sorry for the re-post. I posted these questions in another thread but additional questions seem to get drowned out, hence the new thread.

I’m pretty sure someone here can offer some sound advice regarding the gyro selection. Sorry I can’t. I can say my experiences with Diatone / Mamba have been excellent and with a low failure rate. I had inquired about the DJI - non DJI FCs / stacks. And at the time was told they were “the same” other than the plug offered to the DJI vtx.. making the build “easier”.
Honestly, I still have several mamba “tower of power” F4s for my 5” rigs.. and 2F7 FCs still in boxes..
And have no idea what gyro are on any of them..
With the prices are today, I will shop price , check reviews, look at board layout /pad breakout, uarts .. in that order.. gyro would only be considered if reviews states it was a POS and failed..
Then again.. I am still very new to this hobby

I've read complaints about Mamba MK4 FCs with the ICM42688 gyro. Here are some of them: https://www.reddit.com/r/fpv/comments/wy...t/ilyc0oy/
I'm not sure what to make of those complaints , therefor I asked here.

I watched a JB video where he says the ICM42688 gyro itself is good but some FC designs have failed with the implementation of it. BetaFlight 4.3 apparently has default filter settings for the BMI270, so I'm thinking that it would be a good starting point for us true noobs when it comes to filtering in Betaflight. Smoothness is the most important factor for this quad. For my other quads I don't care so much.

If you can't get an FC with an MPU6000 gyro then my next choice would be the BMI270. Unless someone has proof than a particular FC with one of the ICM42688P gyros works well then it just seems to be too much of a gamble right now. We probably need to start compiling a list of which FC's with that ICM gyro have actually been verified as being a good FC that is worth buying.

The other problem we face is that there are so many revisions of some FC's that it becomes difficult to keep track of which revisions are the good ones and then getting hold of discontinued revisions starts to become a challenge. Diatone seems to be one of the worst for bringing out a new FC revision every other month and I've now lost track of how many different versions and revisions there are of the Mamba FC's.

Thanks. It does not look like any of the FCs available locally have the MPU6000. I've emailed two stores about the F722 MK4s they have in stock. In the description on both stores it says BMI270 as gyro but it could be that they simply didn't update the description, or even know that they have the 2022b version with ICM42688.

The new Foxeer F722 V4 Mini at the link below has an MPU6000 gyro. That FC doesn't have a barometer though, so if you need altitude readings that FC won't be suitable unless you wire up an external barometer.

Nice suggestion but I can't get my hands on that one locally, only the Foxeer Mini F722 V4 Pro. It looks like the "Pro" version has the ICM42688 gyro. I wouldn't care about the barometer, and it looks like I only have to swap the telemetry and CURR cables on the ribbon cable to the ESC, but I can't find the MPU6000 version on any of my local dealers.

Edit: Foxeer appear to have yet another one they call "Foxeer F722 V4 Mini Flight Controller 20*20mm BetaFlight" with the ICM42688 gyro which they are advertising as "less latency than the MPU6000".

I decided to go with the Diatone Mamba F722 Mini MK3. According to description on the web-shop it has the MPU6000 and onboard black box recording. It does not have the convenient Air Unit connector or 9V BEC so a little more soldering is required but I'm OK with that.

Funny you say that about the ICM42688P.

I wonder if that's why Diatone has such a huge sale on the MK4 F740 AIO.  You can get it for $68 right now instead of $93 (unless you want wifi)
This flight controller seems to be pretty loaded with features other than that gyro...

Watch our for these. Both the description on the web page and the paper that came with the FC state MPU6000 but I can see from the chip marking that it's the MPU6500. Honest mistake from Diatone? Who knows, but I'm returning it. Now I think I'll try my luck with the F722 MK4 with BMI270 and hope that the description is correct on these.
