Advice on reliable FC options for 65mm build
#1
Hello !

I got my first drone (mobula 6) a couple of months ago. But it got a problem pretty quickly, not even sure it got passed the 2 hours flight time.
I assume the vtx died since I am getting noise now and in the vtx tab on betaflight it says that the device is not ready. Maybe in the future I will try to install an external vtx.

Right now I am looking for some replacement board. And I am not sure what to get, since I have a bad experience with the Happymodel brand I was wondering if you could suggest me some flight controllers that could me more reliable. I heard betafpv might be not that great too, not a lot of options left...so I am kinda lost on what to choose.

I have a Fractal65 frame, so I looking for something that could go on it.
While searching for other brand I found the HGLRC SPECTER 10A, I don't know if it would a great choice for a 65mm only with its weight (even though it seems about the same weight as the one on my mobula6) and cannot find any information on it. Any Thought ?

Any recommendation would be appreciated, thanks !

Too bad about the vtx.  I have to ask a couple questions, not intending to insult intelligence.  Did you check the vtx antenna?  Is it plugged in fully without touching any other components on the board?  Did you try a different antenna?

I got a HappyModel X12 AIO board and shoehorned it into a Meteor75 Pro frame.  It works very well, but I had to shave some spots on the frame to get it to fit.  Dremel to the rescue.

CiottiFPV is very high on the HappyModel F4 2G4 board that comes in the Mobula6.  I have one on order for a new build.  On their website for the board they mention that you have to make sure the vtx antenna plug is not touching any other components on the board.

Both boards are plug and play.  No soldering required except for the power plug.  You plug the motors and camera directly to the board.  CiottoFPV says that the X12 is too big to fit most 65mm and 75mm frames (as I found out), but fits most 85mm and bigger frames.  For 65mm and 75mm the F4 2G4 fits.

(By the way, nano-sized camera wiring is not standardized.  Pay attention to the locations of the yellow, red, and black wires on the plug.  These two boards have one configuration while most other vtx and aio boards use a different configuration.  Hate that.)

Thanks for the reply !

Yes I made sure the vtx was well plugged. It should not have touched any other components as it was positioned the same way as when it arrived.
Although while searching for solutions I stumbled on this video https://youtu.be/t7Hz2Pdo_Aw?t=504 for replacing vtx, he says that on the UFL connector there should not be continuity between "needle" in the center and the "walls" around it. Unless my multimeter is bad or I am doing it badly I am getting continuity, so I assume something went bad...

I was looking at boards similar to the X12 (hence the one I linked in the description) because I would assume that the risk of frying something with 1s battery would be low, also I would guess that with a Fractal65 frame it would fit since the duct are seating a bit higher compared to a mob6 frame or Betafpv one ?

Was going for the Diamond F4 as I got a good deal but it ended up being out of stock Sad

I guess I could go again for the F4 2G4 again... but bad experience with it dying quickly on me :p

the fractial frame is out of carbon and if mounted with steele screws there is a risk to get physical force to the board.

the hglrc aio is a very decent choice, not the most inexpensive one but reliable for sure.

remove the ufl by solder iron and mesure directly on the board would be my route to fugure out the aio as source.

I heard about the possibility to bend the shaft on the motors also. oh well...

Good to hear that the hglrc one is a good choice. It seems quite big with 32mm, but they says it should fit on a 65mm, hopefully that is true. Actually if I take it on Aliexpress it is the same price as the diamond F4 on a dedicated store here.

I'll try to remove the ufl connector. I did not do it since I was not sure of my ability to resolder it back.

Thanks for the informations !

the diamond f4 us the most lightweight full featured aio, but its not as reliable as the hglrc one.

if half a gramm does matter, it comes to that on ultralight micros, the diamond f4 is a better choice.
but on the not to lightweight fractial frame, the hglrc will be a better choice, 2s ability is a plus on the hglrc as example.

Thanks for your help ! I'll go with the hglrc this time, and if I am building another drone I'll move it to a bigger frame, and take the diamond or an equivalent if something new comes out in the future.
I don't need the best drone for playing in the appartment anyway. Even with the mob6 with 19kv motors I find it has plenty of speed and power (specially after swithing to bt2)
