Adding Eachine ProDVR to Quanum Cyclops v2
#1
Hi folks,

I'd like to add a Eachine ProDVR to my Quanum Cyclops v2, so thought I'd brainstorm here (also trying rcgroups) in the hopes I can get some opinions and help. I'd like my end state to be:
  • Supply power to the ProDVR from the Cyclops
  • ProDVR should both record Rx and be able to output to the Cyclops display
  • The Cyclops AVout/RxIn toggle switch should work for switching the Cyclops display between DVR output and Rx output
    • Be able to record with DVR whilst displaying Rx output
    • Be able to play back DVR footage as well as have lag free flight display.
  • The Cyclops AV jacks should continue to work - It is acceptable to temporarily unplug the DVR to use them
  • Use headphones with Rx out while flying (Optional - If jack supports it, and if it would work while DVR recording)
Anyone have any idea if the above is doable?

My idea for an initial approach would be to solder in the dvr in/out wires to where the in/out jacks connect to the board, and add a linear 5v regulator (possibly with a LC filter) for supplying power to the dvr. This is my first attempt at an electronics mod, so I'm a little clueless (I did a bunch in college, but that was 20yrs ago).  Please correct me if I'm going down a dead end!

First step is to figure out the pinouts on the jacks - anyone know what they are or can help me determine which contacts are audio(l/r)/video/ground?

Here are some pics of the guts, let me know if you need a better view of anything:

The DSN-MINI-360 is outputting 6.06v, but the pot isn't accessible to turn it down for the ProDVR, so I think I'll need a BEC (plus I'm not sure if turning it down would affect the operation of the cyclops itself)

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Hi, thanks for the tip, I took a look and it seems very similar to some of the cyclops v1 mods I've seen.  The big difference with the v2 is that I'd like to take advantage of the built in AV connections and AV switch for a more integrated mod.  It seems like it should be doable, but maybe someone with more experience can comment before I go down a path I regret Smile

Ok, I got this to work. I'll do some pictures (or maybe a video, my first!) once I have a chance to clean things up.

My initial plan to connect the prodvr to the pins of both AV jacks didn't work. Or at least, it worked, but had some really bad ghosting when displaying through the DVR. So, instead, I just directly connected the DVR inputs to the AU1 and VO1 pads right above the Rx (and left the DVR outputs connected to AV-in jack's pins). This made things a lot better. The DVR is now wired into my cyclops, and the pre-existing AV/Rx button works to select between raw Rx and DVR display!

The circuits seem to be mostly 6v, and since the DVR is 5v, I was thinking of using a regulator. Fortunately I noticed there is a 5v pad beside the AU1/VO1 pins, and was able to grab a 5v supply from there. The display is still a little fuzzy, so I may try adding in a LC Filter. I grabbed ground from the GND pad on the satellite board (near the Rx/Av button).

I only connected a single ground line from the DVR (the one right beside the +5v line on DVR inputs). When I combined all 5 grounds I was getting some weird behavior where the DVR would only turn on if I connected the battery (dvr still not on), disconnected, then reconnected (then DVR would turn on). No idea why, but seems to work fine with the single ground.

I haven't tested audio yet as I still haven't finished the build with the camera that has a mic, but can't see why it wouldn't work.

Didn't get a chance to do a video before I reassembled (Needed to fly!), so I added some more pics to the album with labeled pinouts for Rx/Av jacks, and how I wired things into the ProDVR - Note I added in this LC Filter, and I couldn't tell the difference, but left it in anyway.  You can probably skip adding a filter if you don't have one.  Hope this helps someone else!

I'd love it if anyone can satisfy my curiosity about why wiring DVR Input to Rx Out jack caused severe ghosting, or why connecting all the ProDVR grounds together caused the odd power on behavior.

don't skip the filter,
it normalizes the power and will clean any "////" lines on your screen.
in cyclops i've seen the power is clean but don't know how it will behave with addtional load.

one way or the other... lc is not expensive Smile or you can add a cap Smile
All the best

signed up on this forum just to say thank you and that this works without flaw. did not use a LF and still have zero lines in my display while piloting. I do suggest viewing via the non DVR feed while flying as the clarity and picture size is much better.

Hello
Excuse my writing, I use a translator. I plugged the + and the - into 5v, but I do not understand the video connection. Could you make pictures? Thank you in advance friend FPV

There are pictures in the album: https://goo.gl/photos/YuCcHKYqgfQcuBrH7
Including some that show all my wiring complete at the end of the process (you should be able to trace where each wire goes based on color), e.g. https://goo.gl/photos/d6RNawB9pkHWD5zL8

Hello,
I have connected well as you. I can record but can not replay the video, even with the external jack connection. Have you made a connection yourself, because I think this connection is missing, and it is probably the problem.
Thanks, have a good day

I'm not sure. My wiring worked for me (and others) without having to do anything special. The only problems I ran into was trying to use the the Rx Out jack, so I grabbed Rxout from the board. All I did was figure out the various pinouts on the AV/Rx jacks with a continuity test, and then grabbed 5v/rxout/ground from the boards. I'm not an electronics expert, so can't say if your additional mod will do any harm, but if it works for you, go for it!
