3 inch motor choice and tuning
#1
How is everyone tuning their 3 inch quads? Mine is flying pretty good, but I can't seem to tune out the prop wash when doing fast cornering. It seems to be worse if I put on bigger batteries. My experience from all the small quads I have had, it looks like this is a common issue with them all. It feels like the motors aren't powerful enough to handle the prop wash very good.

My current setup:
- Kingkong GT130 frame
- Soft mounted spracing clone FC
- Awesome youbi 20A 4in1 ESCs
- Emax 4000kv red bottoms
- dys 3x3045 props
- 4S 600mAh and 1000mAh
- dry weight: 135g
- AUW: 208g (600mAh), 248g (1000mAh)

I also note that the motors gets pretty hot. I can hold/pinch my fingers on them for more than 5 sec, but if they were a couple of degrees more, I probably couldn't.

What experience do you guys have with the emax 1306 red bottoms and 3 inch? What about other motors for 3 inch? I think the emax motors are very fast and it feels like they are more powerful and easier to get a locked in tune than the 1306 3600kv motors found on the Youbi 130 quad, but they still suffers from this prop wash issue.

Anyone tried the brotherhobby 1407 3600kv on 3 inch and 4s? are they any good? I'm just affraid that they don't have the kv needed for 3 inch to be fun, but the bigger motor should probably have some more torque. I also noticed that they are releasing a 4100kv version soon.

Anyone tried the Racerstar 1407 3500kv motors?

if you try removing the filters if your running bf you can reduce prop wash massively, Imo as you said 1407 3600kv is  a bit much stator and not enough kv for 3" and whilst 1407 4000kv is pretty quick you have to lug a heavy 850+ mah which is quite big for a 3" quad..

If i where you id stick to the emax 1306 and run 3s/4s 550-650mah, it will only be slightly slowly top speed than 1407 but much better handling and better in crashes..

personally i even prefer running 3s as it still has good top speed with 4000kv motors and even lower weight and better handling, possibly around 150g depending on your build

Warm motors could indicate that your D gain is to high, if you feel they get to hot see if you can lower D and lower the temp.
Good indication is that you can really keep your fingers on them, for a long time.

Try to reduce the noice in your quadcopter, softmount your FC for example, lower D and see if removing filtering will work.
If you got a noicey quadcopter then removing filtering might not do much and risk making your motors even warmer.

I'm in the middle of a 3" build and using the Force iF1407 3500kv motors and the Armattan Japalura frame. Seems to be the motor size of choice (most seem to use the BrotherHobbies 1407/3600 ) as the Jap's a bit hefty.

So far I have been running it with pt1 in betaflight and notch filters enabled. I haven't tried bf3.2 on It yet, but I have very good experience with it and the dynamic filtering on my 5 inch.

To be honest I haven't tried it with 3s, just 4s 550, 600 and 1000mah packs. Maybe I should try it with a 3s.

its really all personal preference, if you're going to mainly fly it in big open spaces you may as well go with 1407 and 550 or bigger 4s
