1806 2600kv, 2900kv what's the point?
#1
Hello everybody
I am a bit confused here Huh . I am currently building  the ntrepid 180 from haste rc and I am going to use the dys se2205 2300kv. According to miniquadbenchtests the thrust of these motors with 4045BNs or 4x4x3BN are in the 800ish region. Rctimer released a new racing motor series some time ago and two of these are 1806s in two flavors 2600kv and 2900kv which are supposedly perfect for 4 inch props . According to some bench test videos they can pull about 700grams with 4045BN so about 100 less than the dys. Also I read an article about dys releasing a 1806 3000kv one too probably aiming at 4 inch quads. I imagine the best case scenario is to much the 2300kv one in thrust, at least with heavy 4 inch props. What I dont get is the point of choosing the 1806 over the 2205. Gaining 40 grams of of 4 motors and thus increasing efficiency ? or going for lighter props loosing in thrust and again increasing efficiency? or something else ? I haven't flown 1806s so I don't know how a quad behaves with lighter motors. Any opinions?

My naked 5" 1806 quad weighs about 260 grams (light build, so a 4" would be comparable),
that would be 300g on 2205 motors, right?

Let's assume a 1000mah 4s pack (122g)

A bit of math for 1806:
260g + 122g = 382g
2800g(total thrust) / 382g = 7,3 thrust-weight ratio

2205:
300g + 122g = 422g
3200(total thrust) / 422g = 7,6 thrust-weight ratio

That's a tiny difference in T-W ratio but the difference in weight should be noticeable. In my opinion it's better to fly a lighter quad. Judge Yourself  Smile

EDIT: don't want to google for amp draw data, but that can be a good point.

Hmmm very interesting! I wasn't thinking in TWR terms. I thought, what is the point of saving 10gr of a motor when I can gain 100gr of thrust, but apparently that is not the case. Now I am tempted to buy a set of 1806s just for the sake of test  Smile. Amp draw is more or less the same , just a bit less on the 2205.
